A pilot has died after his helicopter crashed into the roof of a lodge within the northern Queensland metropolis of Cairns.
The aircraft crashed into the DoubleTree Hilton Resort round 1:50 a.m. native time on Monday (16:50 p.m. Sunday), inflicting a fireplace and forcing the evacuation of a whole bunch of friends.
The only passenger on board the helicopter died on the scene, and two lodge friends – a person in his 80s and a girl in her 70s – had been taken to hospital in secure situation, authorities stated.
Queensland Police and the aviation security regulator are investigating the circumstances of the crash, with the corporate that chartered the helicopter saying it was an “unauthorized” flight.
Amanda Kay, who was staying at a lodge on Cairns’ foremost esplanade, described seeing a helicopter flying “tremendous low” with no lights on a wet day.

One other bystander stated she noticed the helicopter fly over the lodge twice earlier than the collision.
“Boy, that helicopter went so quick. It is unbelievable,” one girl says within the video, which exhibits the violent aftermath of the crash.

In an announcement, Nautilus Air stated it will work carefully with all Queensland authorities to research the “unauthorized use of considered one of our helicopters early this morning”.
Streets across the lodge had been cordoned off and police declared a state of emergency.
